Cash flow is the most critical component of any successful business. You cannot merely look at your profit and loss accounts and determine your cash flow. Many factors need to be taken into consideration such as accounts payable and receivable, inventory and capital expenditures. The movement of funds in and out of your business should be tracked weekly or at a minimum monthly.
Creating an accurate cash flow projection for the next quarter should be completed and if there is a hint of cash flow problems this period should be shortened, again depending on your circumstances even weekly.
Increasing receivables
- Track accounts to identify those customers who pay you slowly, asking for cash on delivery is a better alternative to not dealing with slow paying customers.
- Offer a small discount for customers who pay earlier
- Issue invoices promptly and reduce the number of days for payment
- Take deposits on all new orders
- Make it easier for customers to pay, accepting cheques will result in further delays in receiving funds
Managing Payables
- Choosing suppliers with more flexible payment terms rather than lowest price
- Take advantage of a suppliers payment terms, if you have 60 days to make payment, don’t pay on day 30
- Pay in line with your payment terms to prevent late payment fees
Request a call back
Other options
- Sell equipment that you no longer use and consider selling any inventory that is no longer required at a discount
- Consider leasing equipment such as vehicles and computers to avoid tying up cash
- Cut recurring expenses, can your workforce be reduced or are there any services or insurances that you no longer require?
- Can you renegotiate the terms for outstanding loans or leases
Another option could be to start factoring which is where your outstanding invoices are paid up front by a company who ‘Factor’ debt. They will then usually collect on your invoices providing better cash flow and debt collection

There are many ways in which debt can affect a business. Lines of credit from suppliers are the lifeblood of most businesses as it allows them to purchase the required stock that they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. If these were to cease it could have a devastating impact on production and subsequently profit.
